Omega Mu Omega Chapter History

Our foundation began in November 2013 with the vision of four dedicated Alpha Kappa Alpha women – Joyce Allen-Taylor, Jacqulynn Broughton Hugee, Sharon Rose Holmes and Evelyn Sample-Oates – who observed a need to broaden the sorority’s mission of Service to All Mankind in the City of Philadelphia. They focused primarily on reactivating inactive sorors and sorors who were General Members to determine their interest in applying to become an interest group seeking to charter a new graduate chapter in Philadelphia. In January 2014 they held their first exploratory meeting with several other members of the sorority.

By September 2014, they had successfully formed an active, diverse, viable group of 35 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, some of whom had been active in our beloved sisterhood since initiation, some of whom had not been active since their college graduations, and variations in between. They proudly reactivated and reclaimed 21 members who were inactive for 2 to 32 years! In November 2014, these 35 sorors were approved by the Directorate of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® to be an officially recognized interest group. They were known as the Philadelphia Liberty Pearls Interest Group.

The intent of the interest group was to pursue an opportunity to strengthen the overall presence and impact of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in the City of Philadelphia. Its members proposed to service a portion of the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania along the Delaware River that is underserved. These communities include, but are not limited to, Northeast Philadelphia, Kensington, Center City and South Philadelphia. Members coined a theme for the proposed service areas and community service efforts – “Serving Communities Along the River.”

After serving for 22 months as the Philadelphia Liberty Pearls Interest Group, the 35 sorors chartered the third graduate chapter in the City of Philadelphia – the Omega Mu Omega Chapter – on September 18, 2016 at the historic Union League of Philadelphia.
